Hwang Dong-hyuk is a South Korean film director and screenwriter who had started his career by writing and/or directing short films such as Our sad Life (2000), A Puff of Smoke (2000), Heaven & Hell (2000), and Miracle Mile (2004). He had later directed and/or written feature films such as My Father (2007), Silenced (2011), and The Fortress (2017). He had shot to global fame in 2021 for creating the survival drama Netflix series Squid Game. He had scripted the show way back in 2008 and had based it on his financial struggles early in life as well as the class disparity in his native South Korea. However, after failing to find a production studio that would support the script for nearly a decade, he had given up on his beloved script coming to life. It was only around 2019 that Netflix had picked it up as part of their drive to expand their foreign-language offerings. Hwang, after his graduation from the Seoul National University, had written and directed several short films including Our Sad Life and A Puff of Smoke.

At the University of Southern California, his graduation thesis film was Miracle Mile (2004), a short film about a Korean-American illegal taxi driver who helps a young Korean woman search for her brother who had been adopted by an American family 2 decades ago. The film was screened at more than 40 international film festivals and had won the DGA Student Film Award as well as a Student Emmy Award.

His feature film debut, titled My Father (2007), was based on the true story of a Korean-American adoptee and U.S. Army soldier stationed in Korea who appears on national TV in a bid to search for his biological parents only to find his father on death row for murder.

His 2nd feature film, titled Silenced (2011), was again based on real-life events and had depicted the cruel treatment and s*xual abuse by the teachers and administrators of the Gwangju Inhwa School for the deaf; as well as the corrupt nexus between police and influential families, and the negligence of duty by civil servants. The movie had caused enough public anger to force lawmakers to pass a bill that abolishes the statute of limitations for s*x crimes against minors.
