Award-winning Balhannah home is dream fulfilled

A HOME at the end of a quiet no-through Hills road has to be seen to be believed, say vendors Steve and Kayleen Harris.

The couple built the award-winning home in 2010 and Mr Harris says they spared no expense in creating the home of their dreams.

“It’s luxury at every turn,” Mr Harris says.

“When we built this place we had just sold a business and were cashed up so we built this place to the very highest standard.

“We wanted it to be self-sustainable and we wanted a large home with an earthy, warm feel.

“It’s not often you see a large building that still gives you a warm feeling, because a lot of the larger homes feel very cold and sterile.”

Mr Harris says the couple had originally planned to build their home on the top of a hill on the property but quickly changed their mind.

“We used to camp on the property and saw that the cattle used to always sleep in a particular area,” Mr Harris said.

“Cattle always sleep in the warmest part of the property, so we decided that if the cows thought this was the best place to sleep, then that’s where we’d build our home.

“We’re right in the middle of 84 acres with almost colosseum-like hills surrounding us, yet we can still walk to the shops and have contact with people.”

The home is made from a combination of rammed earth, Kanmantoo stone, timber joinery, stainless steel and glass.

The property features five bedrooms, the master with an ensuite with bath, shower and double vanity.

This room also has a walk-in robe and a separate toilet.

On the home’s upper level are three more bedrooms, a bathroom and a living room.

The open-plan kitchen joins the meals and living area and features timber cabinetry, stainless steel appliances, two island benches, stone benchtops and stone wall splashbacks.

Other features include a home theatre room with tiered cinema seating, a games room, a covered and decked outdoor entertaining area complete with outdoor kitchen, an inground covered swimming pool and an implement shed for farm machinery that has been designed in the same architectural style as the home.

“The home is great for entertaining because it’s got everything there you could ever want or need,” Mr Harris says.

“There is a sliding window that opens from the kitchen to the barbecue area where you can just pass food from room to room, so not only is the home luxurious, but it functions really well as well.”

The home’s unique style and quality construction was recognised at the 2011 HIA building awards in which it won both Home of the Year and Energy Efficient Home of the Year.

“We scooped the pool down there that year and we’re very proud of the property and the builder,” Mr Harris says.

The couple, who are moving to a farm they own on the South-East, say they will miss the home immensely.

“It’s been an amazing home to live in,” Mr Harris says.

“We’re enormously proud of what we’ve achieved here and it will be very bittersweet to move on to our next adventure.”
